Former Steelers Communications Executive Named to Greensburg YMCA Post
GREENSBURG — Ron Wahl, a former communications coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been named the marketing and communications director at the Greensburg YMCA, CEO Suzanne Printz announced.
“We are really excited to announce the hiring of Ron for this key position in our organization,” said Printz. “As we continue to build our brand and programs, Ron’s diverse and extensive experience in marketing and communications will be essential to our growth and development.”
“I am so excited to join the Y in this capacity,” said Wahl. “Suzanne’s vision and enthusiasm for the Greensburg YMCA is really refreshing and inspiring. I look forward to working with Suzanne and the current staff to bring her aspirations to reality.”
Wahl began his duties July 1.
After spending seven seasons with the Steelers as their communications coordinator (1998-2005), overseeing the media, public and community relations initiatives, Wahl most recently was a soft-surface territory manager for Mohawk Industries, the world’s largest flooring manufacturing, a position he has held since 2011 and from 2005-2009. During that time, he also served as the lead communications/media relations consultant and vice president for communications for ISM/USA, a sports event management and marketing firm with offices in Pittsburgh, PA and Lakewood Ranch, FL (2005-present).
During his Steelers tenure, Wahl oversaw media operations for two home AFC Championship and numerous playoff games, and was selected by the NFL to work four Super Bowls as a member of the league’s media relations staff.
Wahl additionally served for 9½ years in the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department, where he lastly held the title of assistant athletic director for media relations. His main responsibilities were managing the athletic media relations department at Pitt and coordinating the day-to-day publicity efforts for the Panthers. Wahl previously served as sports information director for 2½ years and assistant sports information director from 1988-94, and edited the 1989-90 Pittsburgh Varsity Sports Yearbook that was selected as the Best in the Nation. He also co-edited numerous other athletics publications that received national recognition.
Prior to his Pitt appointment, he served as sports information director and assistant media relations director at Point Park College.
Wahl received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (where he also played football for three years) in 1982 and worked as an intern in the IUP Sports Information office. He earned his master’s degree in journalism and communications in 1993 from Point Park College.
He and his wife, Cathy, live in Penn Township.
