Parent Involvement Information

Our Early Childhood Learning Center parents can choose to be as hands-on with their child’s Y experience as they would like. Parents are welcome to visit during the regular curriculum day or just join them for lunch. Families are also encouraged to attend our various special events as the children are quite proud to say that their family is at school: we host special events for Grandparent’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day as well as Halloween Celebrations, the Thanksgiving Family Feast, our Winter Holiday Program and center wide Graduation Ceremony.

Parents can also show their involvement by cheering their child on in the St. Jude’s Trike-a-thon, helping with set-up of the Scholastic Book Fair or organization of the Easter Egg Hunt. If parents would like to volunteer on a regular basis or chaperone on field trips they may do so by completing the Y Volunteer Packet and obtaining the necessary clearances.

Facility Features

Security

The Early Childhood Learning Center has a security system in place to ensure safety. All families enrolled in the center receive a proxy card to access the center. The safety of the children is our number one priority.

Facility Features

The Early Childhood Learning Center children have the benefit of using the YMCA facility’s gymnasium and outdoor play yard.

With the YMCA in the heart of Greensburg, the children get to go on excursions through the town. Some of the places the children visit are St. Clair Park, The Greensburg-Hempfield Library, and the Palace Theater.

Local Excursions, Special Visitors/Events, Field Trips

The children of the Early Childhood Learning Center enjoy various excursions throughout the year such as play time at St. Clair Park; story times at the Greensburg-Hempfield Library; summer swim days at Veterans’ Memorial Pool and sports time at Lynch Field.

We have been the recipient of a Guest Reader for the PA One Book multiple times; we have a monthly story time with our CEO and enjoy visits from the Kona Ice Truck. We host a community Fall Fest and Healthy Kids Day which are free family focused events as well as participate in the Annual Greensburg Holiday Parade.

Our Food Coordinator plans regular cooking experiences for the children based around our themes—and makes it a fun, educational and yummy time for all the kids!

Throughout the year we will take the children on a few field trips: some of our very favorites are The National Aviary, The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Carnegie Science Center and Kerber’s Farm and Dairy.

Finally, we trick-or-treat and partake in Halloween Celebrations; host a family Thanksgiving Feast; perform a Winter Holiday Show; have Mother’s Day Tea; enjoy Doughnuts with Dad; have Cookies and Milk with Our Grandparents and wrap up the year with an entire center Graduation Ceremony.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

The Child and Adult Care Food Program provides reimbursements to Early Childhood Learning Center for healthy meals and snacks served to children enrolled in the center. The program allows the center to provide breakfast (7:00 am-8:30 am), lunch (12:00 pm), and two snacks (10:00 am & 3:00 pm) daily for each child. Our menus ensure the children are receiving all required components to meet the CACFP guidelines. Bread, fruits, vegetables, meats, and milk are requirements for the food program. Our milk comes from Turner’s Dairy, a local dairy, and is rBST free.

Financial Assistance Information

The Greensburg YMCA strives to never turn any child away due to the families inability to pay for programming. With that in mind we will accept two forms of assistance in defraying the costs of camp. One way is through the YMCA Annual Support Campaign. The YMCA is able to grant scholarships to families in need due to the generosity of local businesses and individuals who donate monies to the campaign.  We encourage those who may not be able to afford child care services on their own to complete a Financial Assistance Application and submit it to the Welcome Center of the YMCA to the attention of Debby King. Please allow up to four weeks for processing.  Additionally, the Early Childhood Learning Center accepts payment from the Early Learning Resource Center (formerly known as Child Care Information Services, CCIS).  Families should contact the Early Learning Resource Center to inquire if they are qualified (724-836-4580).
